You drive your own team of dogs through Bolterdalen, a wide valley about 20 minutes from town. The trip runs 4 to 6 hours including kennel time, and it is bookable from December to May, though the core season with the most dependable snow and light is March to May. Early winter trips happen in near-darkness; spring trips happen under a sky that barely sets.

How it actually works

Pickup is from Longyearbyen to the kennels, where you meet the dogs and get a short briefing on the brake, the lines, and how a sled actually steers. Then you go out two to a sled, taking turns driving and riding, behind a lead guide who sets the pace. Groups vary but you are usually one of 4 to 10 sleds in a loose convoy. You get a thermal suit, boots, gloves, and a hat over your own layers; bring sunglasses for spring trips, because snow glare is real once the sun returns. Expect to handle the dogs yourself at the kennel too, hooking up and unhooking, which is part of the trip rather than a chore done for you.

March and April are the sweet spot: firm snow, real daylight, and temperatures that make a long run pleasant rather than an endurance test.

What to expect

Driving a sled is more work than it looks. You brake on downhills, push on uphills, and stay alert the whole time, so it is active rather than a scenic ride. The dogs are loud, eager, and strong at the start line, which surprises people who expected a calm petting session. Snow and visibility can shorten or move a route, and in deep winter you are doing all of this in the cold and dark, which is either the appeal or the deterrent depending on you.
