Included

Full-day snowmobile expeditions that cover real ground, typically toward the east coast or across to the Russian town of Barentsburg. These run up to 10 hours and are bookable from November to May, once the snow cover and frozen valleys make long routes possible. This is the touring end of snowmobiling, not a short joyride: you spend most of the day on the machine.

How it actually works

Pickup is from Longyearbyen, where you suit up and get a driving briefing before heading out. You ride your own snowmobile, often two sharing one machine and swapping the driver seat, behind a guide who navigates and sets the speed. Group size is usually 4 to 12 machines so the guide can keep the line together over open terrain. You get a full thermal suit, boots, gloves, balaclava, and helmet; bring goggles, hand-warmers, and any medication you might want mid-day, because you are far from town for hours. The guide carries a rifle and flare, mandatory outside the settlement, and the convoy stops for fuel, food, and the views along the way.

February through April is when the long routes to the east coast and Barentsburg are most dependable, with both snow and daylight on your side.

What to expect

A full day on a snowmobile is tiring and cold, even in a good suit, and the seat time is the point rather than a downside. Routes change with weather, avalanche risk, and ice conditions, so the east-coast plan can become a different valley with little warning. Distances are large and help is far, which is exactly why the armed guide and the convoy structure exist. Come for the scale of empty country you cover, not for a relaxed outing.
