Included

A summer quad-bike tour along Adventdalen, the broad valley that runs inland from Longyearbyen. The trip is about 4 hours and operates from June to September, the snow-free window when the tundra, gravel tracks, and braided riverbeds are exposed and rideable. You drive your own ATV over open ground, which is a different feel from the winter snowmobile routes that cover the same valley.

How it actually works

Pickup is from Longyearbyen, with a short briefing on the controls, the brake, and how to read soft ground before you set off. You ride your own quad, single or two-up depending on the operator, in a line behind a guide who picks the route around wet patches and river crossings. Groups are usually 4 to 10 machines. You get a helmet, goggles, and often a windproof oversuit; bring layers, waterproof boots, and gloves, because even in summer Adventdalen is cold and exposed once you stop moving. The guide carries a rifle, standard for any trip past the town boundary, and stops at viewpoints over the valley and old mining relics.

Best month for this

MonthLightConditions

JulyFull midnight sunDriest, firmest tracks
AugustMidnight sun fadingGood ground, green tundra
SeptemberTwilight returningCold, first frosts, muddy

July and August give the firmest, driest riding. June can be muddy from the thaw, and by late September frost and rain make the ground unpredictable, which can shorten or cancel a tour.

What to expect

This is a bumpy, dusty or muddy ride rather than a smooth cruise, and you will feel the terrain through the handlebars the whole way. It is the most accessible motorised trip here, with no winter cold to fight, but the tundra is fragile and you stay on the guide’s line for that reason. Wildlife along the valley is possible, usually reindeer and birds, never a sure thing. Come for easy access to big open country in the summer light, not for speed or guaranteed animals.
